Gas hogs

Sorry, this is a rant about Texans driving…We recently spent a week at the beach in Texas.  On the way there I made a smart alec remark to my husband that we wouldn’t see a Prius in Texas (my husband drives one).  Here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia we see them on a daily basis.  Sometimes one or two, sometimes over ten in a day.  In Texas we saw three on the day we went to Houston.  That was it.  Three.  We did see a  gazillion trucks and SUVs flying down I-10.  I think there are more trucks and SUVs than cars in that state (or at least where we were).

In contrast, returning to the Shore from the Charlottesville area this weekend we saw 25 – a daily record.  My cousin, who lives in Texas, made the comment that she didn’t think the Prius was catching on.  Okay, maybe in Texas they aren’t, but in the rest of the world there is a waiting list a mile long to get one.

Who woulda thunk?

I recently spent a week at the beach with no Internet access and little to no cell phone service (about 5 miles down the road for a stretch of 3 miles, right under a tower).  Did I miss it?  NO!!

It does seem antiquated, though – 30 minutes from Galveston, TX, an hour from Houston – but definitely in the boonies where these all too common services were nil.  It wasn’t as if we were far from civilization or anything.  There were houses galore, restaurants, stores – every amenity other than Internet and cell phone (although my neice could text her boyfriend if she stood on the beach in the surf….)
